GRANDVIEW (CBSDFW.COM) – A first of its kind Texas-themed obstacle course and race kicks off this weekend.

The Wild West Adventure race takes place Saturday, May 5, at the Beaumont Ranch in Grandview.

After a participant died three weeks ago during The Fort Worth Mud Run, which is a similar race, organizers of the Wild West Adventure have safety in mind.

“When you build a course there is a fine balance between making it challenging, making it fun, and ultimately making it safe for everyone to participate,” said Event Manager Eric Lindberg, “We have a medic station at the finish line, one out on the course; we have over 40 course monitors; everyone is tied in with walkie-talkies, so there is an effective communication plan in place.”

A replica of a western town sets the stage for the race that promises to be as rugged as Texas.

“It is Texas; it is the Wild West,” Lindberg said. “The theme resonates through the entire course.”

“The Wild West Race is the only western-themed obstacle course race in the world,” said race organizer Krys Davis, “we have over a dozen obstacles they’re all western themed.”

One of those obstacles is Mustache Mayhem Mountain, a 25-foot rope wall that racers have to climb over before reaching the finish line.

“The obstacles are challenging, that’s what our racers are coming for, but they’re not impossible,” Davis said. “Racers are definitely going to have a good time, but they’re definitely going to feel challenged and feel accomplished after they do this and they’re going to have a blast.”

Participants are not required to do all of the obstacles, and are encouraged to recognize their individual limitations.

“We have everybody from high fitness levels, tri-athletes, mud runners that do this all the time,” Davis said, “but we have some people that are coming out for the very first time, who just lost 50 pounds.”

Whether racers are crawling through the mud, or running through the harsh terrain, the challenge is what draws people to participate.

Participants can register the morning of the race. The cost to register is $80, and includes a t-shirt, food, and alcohol for those over the age of 21. Click here to find out more.
